DNA testing has become well-known for establishing family links and, while it’s been around several decades, technological advances now put it in reach of those building their family tree. A workshop at Bolivia Hall on Saturday, October 29, will inform researchers on how to use this tool although it does have its limitations.

“It won’t tell you the name of your great-greatgrandmother, but it will tell you how your family moved through the continents,” Tenterfield Family History Group’s Sandra Wilson said.
“If you’re prepared to pay the price, it can trace those movements right back to Africa.”

Some group members have already done their cheek swabs and sent their samples to the US for testing following an earlier presentation by dedicated family history collector Tim Fitzpatrick, and are eagerly awaiting the results.
“Our lot came to Australia in 1856,” Sandra said. “One cousin went to the US instead, and part of his family have had their DNA done.”
Results will be more illuminating as the DNA database grows, but Sandra said around eight million people around the world have already had the test. She said we can’t change the past but she’d be more than happy to unearth a few skeletons in her family closet.
“DNA research of genetic markers continues to expand to precisely determine the time frame to a common ancestor. In one way or another, we’re all connected.”
The tests are not currently done in Australia and the group uses Family Tree DNA in Texas, USA. The cost is $110 to $420 depending on options, and the results take 2-3 months.
“It can validate the paper records,” Sandra said. “If you’ve done family history all your life, you want to take the next step. “
All are welcome to the October 29 workshop starting at 10am, with a presentation by Mr Fitzpatrick. The cost is $10 with tea and coffee provided. Bring a picnic lunch.
