Glen Innes Severn Council mayor Steve Toms said the concept was a chance for the younger generations to build ownership over something that is an important resource within the community.
“They’re significant bodies of water because those two [current water holes] together are 16 per cent bigger than the Beardy reservoir which is the main water supply,” Mr Toms said.
The water holes are a result of utilising the quarry, which Council purchased some years ago and have subsequently been filled with water, securing the town against drought.
Schools within the local government area will be able to submit their proposed names in 2017.
Tenterfield undertook a similar exercise 10 years ago to name its town water supply.
The end result was …. Tenterfield Dam.
