This year’s Willows event at the Tenterfield Golf Club – split over two weekends for the first time, due to the large field – has been deemed another major success. Mild weather, well-maintained greens and a smoothly-run tournament all earned praise from the 290 golfers, just shy of the 300 maximum after a couple of late withdrawals.

“Both weekends went really well,” organiser Michael Manser said.
While he couldn’t report any holes-in-one or records broken, Manser said the men’s team from Logan City who won the 36-hole aggregate in the second event achieved a great result with 94 points.
“Quite a few local players performed well also,” he said.
While there were few Tenterfield golfers in the first weekend’s 4BBB stableford, Manser said they made up probably half the field in the second event.
Willows 1
In Willows 1 the 36-hole event was won by Michael Cutmore paired up with son Michael Jnr. Tenterfield players also exercised their local knowledge, taking out all the nearest-the-pins on the Saturday.
Wayne Little playing with Andrew Thompson from up the road at Wallangarra won Saturday’s play, while Aiden Williams was half the team that won on Sunday. (The Austin boys – Ben and Jason – were runners-up.)
Another Tenterfield/Wallangarra pairing – Jenny Meagher and Marie Cook – won the ladies 36-hole in Willows 1. Letitia Jones and Ronnie Cook won the Sunday comp, and the local ladies also scored their share of NTPs.
Willows 2
While local players didn’t figure in the 36-hole results in Willow 2, they swept the field in the men’s Saturday event won by Brian Curry and Peter Mustoo, followed by John Edmonds and Garry Sutcliffe, and David Gianini and Ric Ainsworth.
Neil Gale and Frank Moore won the Sunday comp, with Glenn Caisley and Marty Marshman coming in third.
In the ladies, Val Davidson teamed up with Di Benson to win Willow 2’s 36-hole event, with Karen Manser and Kath Devereux as runners-up. Jenny Meagher and Marie Cook come in fourth.
Sharon Maunder and Dawn McMeniman won the Sunday comp, with Ronnie Foster and Shelley Cockburn coming second.
With the Willows being a fixture of the Golf Club calendar now for 40 years, organisers are shaking things up a bit next year.
Again the event will be run over two weekends and still under the Willows banner, but the first weekend (third week in February) will be the familiar Four Ball Best Ball (4BBB) stableford while the following weekend will be a 4BBB stroke event.
The club has already received 170 nominations for the stableford and 60 for the stroke.
“Visitors love coming to stay here,” Manser said.
He gave due credit to the greenkeepers and club staff and management for enabling the event to run smoothly and be so enjoyable.
