While it might not yet sit comfortably with those of us in the southern hemisphere, the transition from the name ‘soccer’ to ‘football’ continues unabated with the new football season (the one with the round white ball) about to commence.

As the football season approaches, more than 9000 balls have flooded Northern NSW thanks to Northern NSW Football’s (NNSWF) official partner Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Affordability, the profile of the game both nationally and internationally and its appeal to both male and female players of all ages and ability has seen football registrations rise 6.46 per cent across Northern NSW in 2016, with over 64,000 players last season, eclipsing the 6.33 per cent growth achieved in 2015.
In 2016 in Northern Inland, Entry Level (5-7 years) numbers jumped 12.25 per cent, with female participation up 9.61 per cent and overall participation growth up 7.12 per cent to a total of 5927 registered players in the region.
The growth across Northern NSW and nationally was confirmed by the Australian Sports Commission in research released in December 2016 that confirming football’s place as Australia’s number one club-based participation sport.
The Tenterfield Junior Soccer Association isn’t quite so flush with players, and is actively seeking more 5-11 year olds to join in the game (Age is as of December 31, 2017).
Last year’s season involved new uniforms, regular training with our volunteer coaches and brought success at carnivals involving robin round games in Warwick, Stanthorpe and Glen Innes.
The club has gone from strength to strength last season and we are hoping do to this again this year. We had two divisions last season: four teams in divisions 1 and six teams in division 2.
This season the club is hoping to be more involved in training sessions for players through nationally-recognised coaches and willing dads and mums.
Organisers are hoping to keep travel to a minimum for families, participating in carnivals in Warwick, Stanthorpe and Glen Innes this season.
Registration cost is $85 per player and a uniform set costs $30 including jersey, shorts and socks. As part of their registration each player receives a training shirt, ball and shin pads. There will be another registration morning on Saturday April 1 from 10am to noon at Shirley Park, including a training and try out morning.
