Started in 1999 by a group of farmers who wanted a more scientific approach to making smart decisions on farm, the company is now a limited company with more than 60 farmer shareholders.
The fifth branch of the AMPS stable was opened in Tamworth recently and the manager Cliff Bramley said each year hundreds of thousands of dollars were invested into research.
Research in each area – Caroona, Armatree, Moree, Walgett and Tamworth – has a local committee to decide the best focus for trials.
“AMPS Research provides growers with production research on, for example, different wheat varieties, nutrition of pastures and real fertiliser costs,” Mr Bramley said. “The focus has increasingly be on improving efficiency. Having the facts based on real trials helps farmers make the right decisions.” He predicts in the future drones will have a significant role in boosting efficiency and cutting costs.
