Ms Smits had four protegees in tow, keen to learn the inside tips not only on securing this year’s crown but on representing Australia at a number of huge rodeo events in North America and Canada. She is heading overseas in July to make appearances at the Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Calgary Stampede and the Fort Worth Stock Show, ‘the biggest and best in the world’, she said.
Over the weekend Ms Smits schooled the young women in public speaking, modelling and deportment, and horsemanship. Makeup and hair are also an important part of the process.
While it’s vital that the rodeo queen be able to ride (while carrying the Australian flag) for street parades and grand entries, and be comfortable riding a variety of horses, Ms Smits said it isn’t necessary for entrants to be skilled horsewoman to participate in the journey of personal development the quest offers. Entry is open to all women aged 17-34. Judging takes places on the Gold Coast in September to see who will take over the crown.
“It’s a valuable experience and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said.
“I’ve met so many different people, and rodeo is such as huge part of the American culture. We’re celebrities over there, and of course they love the accent.”
She sees her role as promoting the amazing sport of rodeo and the western way of life.
Travelling all the way from her home in Gidgegannup, WA for the workshop was Rachel Oakes, Rodeo Princess of her state and a true rodeo girl. Fourteen-year-old Rachel is no stranger to this side of the country, having competed in breakaway racing at the National Titles in Tamworth in January. (She also holds the state title for barrel racing for her age group.)
Rodeo Queen of Australia entries are still open. Check out the Facebook page for details. Those in the running for the crown are required to fundraise $5000, while those raising $3500 are eligible for the runner-up titles and also attend judging week.
