The Junior Red Cross members asked for donations of a dollar and each student that donated received a friendship band for their kindness. Members of the local Red Cross dropped to be a part of this annual fundraising activity. The group is so happy with the result of $388 and is proud of their school's generosity, giving to help others in need. Thank you to all that donated and to the many Junior Red Cross members for volunteering your time.
The 2017 Junior Red Cross group comprises 37 year 5 and year 6 GIPS students, assisted by school liaison Kristen Lynn and Glen Innes Junior Red Cross liaison Officer Mary Hollingworth.
The students meet every fortnight, proudly wearing their badges and learning about the many activities of Red Cross locally, regionally and worldwide.
At each meeting the Red Cross pledge is recited and students regularly contribute information they have found on the internet or in the newspapers. This results in very interesting ,engaging and informative discussion.
An important part of the meetings is the opportunity for students to gain experience and confidence in public speaking and meeting procedure along with the value of individual community service, especially in small communities like Glen Innes.
Many resources including leaflets, flags, information, pencils and badges have been generously provided by the Sydney head office, which is appreciated by the group. The 2017 cohort of JRC is particularly enthusiastic and committed to learning about Red Cross, giving up recess to participate in the meetings.
Already this year they have proudly marched in the Anzac Day march ,arranged an enjoyable and successful fundraiser, and planned a presentation for the Glen Innes branch’s July AGM. A community service visit and Red Cross Christmas tree entry are some of the activities planned for later in the year.
Junior Red Cross has a long and proud history at GIPS that looks set for a very strong and proud future. Both Ms Lynn and Mrs Hollingworth said they feel very privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside the 2017 Junior Red Cross team.
