The biennial event kicked off with the speech sections on Monday, August 21 adjudicated by Rob Christmas.
The littlest ones showed the way with Amelia Aquilini first up performing in the six years and under section. The program then progressed through recitation, prose (both impromptu and own choice), story telling, nursery rhymes, recitations, bush poetry, prepared speeches, compositions, bible readings and even tag-team performances in pair poetry.
For many of the entrants it was their first time on stage, making it a somewhat daunting experience but an invaluable one.
Adjudicator Ms Christmas commented on the bravery of the children, with helpful hints on big loud voices and keeping hands out of pockets to release nervousness.
Drake Public School had a strong showing with many of its students performing individually, as well as in the schools sections.
Teams from The Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School and St Joseph’s Primary School also competed in the schools sections.
In the evening session the program moved in the categories for older performers, including a number of stars of the recent Captain Thunderbox melodrama so they’d already be familiar with the stage.
Full results from the speech sections will be published when available. The eisteddfod continues with a huge dance program and the music sections through to Saturday, August 26.
