The semi and its empty low-loader trailer were travelling from Toowoomba to Sydney with the driver’s six-year-old son in the sleeping quarters at the rear of the cabin. The driver reported detecting a burning smell before looking out the window to find flames behind him.
He managed to pull the truck over and jump from the cabin with his son before it was engulfed in flames. A number of passing vehicles stopped to lend assistance before emergency crews arrived.
Police blocked the highway while Fire and Rescue dealt with the cabin fire and RFS extinguished a small grass fire ignited by the truck. In all the operation took an hour and 20 minutes.
A mechanical fault is suspected as being the cause of the blaze.
