Under 12s first team in 30 years to win back-to-back titles

The Tenterfield Tigers under 12s have amassed a feat which no other side from the town has been able to do in 30 years – win back-to-back premierships.

Competing in the under 11 competition in 2016 the side claimed the trophy and made it two-in-a-row when they beat Wattles 30-22 in Saturday’s 2017 decider.

Club president Peter Holley said the team coached by Scott Koch had only lost one game all year and deserve to claim the premiership.

“They're just a good group of mates, they get on well together and they're well coached,” he said.

“They stuck together and have done a really good job.”

Next year’s competition will be a tough ask for the young side as they move into an under 14’s division.

“They will move up into under 14s which will be a big challenge for them because stepping up from 12s to 14s is a two year age gap,” Holley said.

A whopping 584 points differential and an undefeated season landed the Tigers league taggers the premiership, despite not stepping out on the field in a grand final. A motor vehicle accident prevented their grand final opponents Goondiwindi from arriving and, due to their outstanding records, the Tenterfield side were awarded the trophy.

“It was a bit of a hollow victory but they deserve it,” Holley said.
