“The numbers of riders taking part are a big jump up on the numbers involved last year,” said the president of Border Country Trail Riders, Vince Sherry.
“We have riders taking part from across the region as well as Queensland, Grafton and the mid north coast.”
This is the fifth year the event has been held and Mr Sherry said a new short historical trail ride will be held on the Saturday.
“We’ll go around the western side of town to the local cemetery, where Maj. James Francis Thomas, the solicitor who defended Lieutenant Harry "Breaker" Morant is buried, and then to the historical old railway station,” he said.
“There is also a family movie night at the Sir Henry Parkes School of Arts on Sunday night which everyone is welcome to attend, we are showing the movie Dunkirk.”
The ride uses the showground as its base, including its camping, catering and stabling facilities. As well as the short historical ride on Saturday, there will be rides on the Sunday and Monday, each starting and finishing at the showground.
Sunday’s outing takes riders through the common and out Steinbrook Rd to Dairy Mountain to enjoy the spectacular views over Tenterfield from 1100 metres. Then it’s lunch at Garry and Nancy Pitkin’s before returning to the showground via Scrub Rd.
On Monday the riders head out to the northern side of Tenterfield touring the travelling stock routes before returning to the showground for lunch.
Registrations are being accepted up until 1pm on Saturday, either online or at the showground. Mr Sherry said he and helpers will be set up in the dining room under the grandstand to take registrations, which will have to close off then to allow for catering to be organised.
“Every dollar we raise through this event goes towards keeping the annual Tenterfield Show going,’ he said.
