It was a case of déjà vu for Councillor Don Forbes in his bid for higher office at September’s council meeting, although this time with more success.

Cr Forbes is the designated deputy mayor for the coming 12 months after his name was drawn by lot to fill the position. Voting was tied 5-all between him and fellow nominee (and incumbent) Cr Greg Sauer before acting chief executive Kylie Smith drew Cr Forbes’ name.
A similar process played out 12 months ago in determining the mayoral position, when votes for Cr Forbes and Cr Peter Petty were tied and Cr Petty’s name was drawn from a hat.
Cr Petty offered his congratulations to Cr Forbes and his thanks to Cr Sauer for his work as deputy mayor over the past year.
“I look forward to working with Don and would like to thank Cr Sauer for the outstanding job he has done as deputy mayor,” Cr Petty said.
“Greg has been a great support for me in the mayoral role and out in the community.”
Cr Petty was elected in September 2016 for a two-year term following changes to the Local Government Act.
The September Extraordinary Meeting is also the time to elect delegates for council committees, external boards and associations and confirming the schedule of council meetings for the period.
