A highlight of the open house will be an informal art exhibition on the Tuesday evening from 5.30pm to 8pm to showcase some of the work of the Challenge clients, which also reflects some of the activities that go on there.
A recent trip to Darling Downs Zoo resulted in some great photographs which will be framed for the exhibition, and one of the clients is a keen sketch artist whose portraits are commissioned by friends and family. Her depictions of some famous faces will be included in the exhibition, as will some of the other artistic efforts of the service’s clients.
Senior support worker Suzanne Griffiths said clients enjoy the artistic outlet and the process is quite therapeutic.
Artworks will be offered for sale and some of the artists and their families will be present, but the exhibition is more a celebration of the work going on at the centre, supporting its clients in exploring their potential and in some cases securing a degree of independence.
Ms Griffiths said one client has progressed to the point of securing his learner driver’s licence, and will also be supported in his computer studies.
People are invited to visit anytime on the open days between 9am and 4pm to learn about the services being offered, and the advantages of having such a facility in town. They can also inquire about help to get NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) packages and plans in place.
Refreshments will be available throughout the open days and at the art exhibition and will all be prepared by clients and staff, with cooking days a regular activity at the centre.
