Mrs Cox has participated in various trials in collaboration with WormBoss operations manager Deb Maxwell, and is enjoying the benefits of the lessons learned.
She operates the 2000 acre property Kurrajong running 1200 Merino breeders plus followers, along with cattle. Barber’s pole worm has long been an issue, but managed grazing initially led to the reduction of one drench a year, reaping dividends in terms of cost and effort.
Mrs Cox said she also is no longer dictated by the calendar as to when to drench, instead basing drenching decisions on worm egg count results. This has led to another annual drench being dropped, reducing drenching frequency to just three or four times a year, depending on rainfall.
She hasn’t yet resorted to the new barber’s pole vaccine Barbervax, opting to ‘keep it up her sleeve’. Running the farm single-handedly with son Jeremy able to help just two days a week, she said time constraints are the main factor for not making use of the vaccine, for now.
