Society president Lois McGuinness was very pleased with the turnout, easing people into the Christmas period with the help of flower arranging supremo Irene McIndoe from Glen Innes to provide guidance and advice.
The workshop was not of the ‘pretty flowers in a vase’ variety. The object was to assemble a Christmas-themed centrepiece in a tapestry design, incorporating materials like moss, ivy, bark, leaves, berries, and succulents along with gold wire and other embellishments.
Each participant managed to produce their own unique interpretation of the task, with Mrs McIndoe’s stunning creation as inspiration. Mrs McGuinness said the out-of-the-ordinary challenge encouraged participants to broaden their horizons, and prepared them for entering the decorative section in the upcoming Tenterfield Show.
“It gave us some new ideas, and a bit of confidence,” she said.
She would love to see more people take advantage of the workshops, to share in the good friendship and fun as well as expert instruction, and stressed that you don’t have to be a member of the society to do so.
While this is the last workshop for this year, there will be several scheduled throughout 2018. Next event on the horticultural calendar, however, is preparing for the Tenterfield Show, followed swiftly by the annual dahlia show. Hopefully displays at these events will inspire more people to take part and want to create their own arrangements.
There’s also plenty of inspiration in local gardens with recent rains and mild weather producing some stunning spring flower displays. Mrs McGuinness urged flower lovers to take a drive around town to admire the beauty.
Then it may be time to join the Horticultural Society for the exchange of ideas on how best to create such gardens, and enjoy the flowers and foliage they produce.
