IN THE other awards ceremony known as iRedCarpet 2.0, cricket's finest paraded into Crown for the Allan Border Medal.
On-field conditions on the red carpet were dry but outside there was 92 per cent humidity and rain was the enemy of hair prone to frizziness. The ladies put on the Ritz with plunging backlines and bling on the fingers, ears and wrists.
Shane Warne flew back from the US to be inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, arriving home at 3pm, preening himself and bringing as his dates children Brooke, Summer and Jackson.
The spin king was ''very humbled'' by the accolade and it was a ''big surprise'' to find out. As for the jetlag: ''Hopefully I don't fall asleep.''
His fiancee, Elizabeth Hurley, sent her regards via Twitter, the modern version of the telegram, by saying: ''Really wish I could have been in Australia with SW … sadly, had to stay in NY shooting Gossip Girl. Have to earn my humble crust … sob.''
Ricky Ponting's wife, Rianna, wore a blue gown by Steven Khalil, the same designer who made her wedding dress. ''I can't sit down,'' she said. ''I did the mermaid slide into the car.'' There were serious Nic Cerrone diamonds on her fingers from her ''very generous husband'' who splurged when she gave birth to daughters Emmy and Matisse.
In the same week that Lara Bingle was awarded her own reality TV show on Channel Ten, her ex-fiance, Michael Clarke, made a bold statement stepping out with partner, Kyly Boldy. She went for serious red-carpet glamour in a black Louis Vuitton gown that she was stitched into. ''I can't get out of it,'' she joked.
Perhaps symbolising an upmarket baggy green, Shane Watson's wife, Lee Furlong, wore a divine green velvet gown by Johanna Johnson, a label with Oscars cachet after Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph wore a purple one. Furlong hailed the designer: ''She makes the most beautiful things. I'm really thrilled she could make it for me.''
Mitchell Johnson's wife, Jessica, who had a swept-up hairdo to beat the frizz, wore a red and black gown by Perth label Zhivago and had VIP access to accessories from her own label Jessica Bratich.
There was more green from Julia Barry, partner of Matthew Wade, in an emerald green gown that she designed and was sewn by Flinders Lane couturier Shirley Keon from Keon Couture.
Cameron White arrived with partner Jacqui Morris, a Minter Ellison lawyer who switched from corporate mode at 2.30pm and slid into a Rachel Gilbert gown and Kozminsky jewellery. ''I've been coming for seven years,'' she said. ''I try to do something a little different.''
As for the female cricket players of the Southern Stars, Ellyse Perry wore a gown by Alex Perry (no relation) but how fortunate for her to be dressed by the corset king.
