Numbers were down with some vendors struggling to get their cattle to market in the very wet conditions, but no farmers were complaining about the soaking the district has received at Harold Curry’s annual Feature Angus and All Breeds sale on Thursday, March 16.

Just under 1600 cattle were yarded, and the agents congratulated all vendors on their efforts to yard their cattle under some very trying circumstances.
Vendors were pleased to see the market kick by 15 to 20 cents as buyers competed strongly to secure numbers for their orders, pushing the sale average to $977.79 across the board. Competition came from Southern Queensland, Northern and Western NSW along with strong local competition and 51 registered bidders on Auctions Plus, covering all the eastern states.
The market was consistently strong throughout the sale with Angus weaner steers selling from 364 cents to a top of 429 cents for a pen of Angus weaner steers account Michael and Pauline Hurtz “Glen Hope” Tenterfield selling to Nowlan Stock & Station Agents of Killarney, returning $971.10. Michael and Pauline’s weaners are consistently sought with their 92 steers averaging 410.7 cents or $1098.94.
The gong for the highest returning weaner steers went to Geoff and Yendis Johnson, Geroma Partnership of Tenterfield, making $1,292.23 for a pen of 28 steers. The Johnsons sold 130 mixed sex weaners to average $1071, 407 cents for steers and 330 cents for heifers.
George and Helen Mulherin “Wilgoose”, Tenterfield kicked proceedings off for the day with 112 weaner steers selling from 340 cents to 409 cents to average $1147.15 with Paraway Pastoral Company and Bob Jamieson Agencies of Inverell securing the bulk of the line.
Geoff and Clare Robertson “Currawong” Tenterfield won Champion pen of Angus weaner steers with their pen of 33 steers weighing 294.4kg selling for 400c to return $1,177.58. Milton and Margaret Barratt, Lyndale Partnership “Swamp Oak” Tenterfield won the Champion pen of Angus weaner heifers with their pen of 30 heifers weighing 317.5kg selling for 345 cents to return $1,095.38 with Davidson & Cameron of Narrabri securing them.
Weaner heifers sold from 270 to 352 cents to average 332 cents. The keenly sought calves of regular vendor Monica and Grant Hutchings “Scrub” Tenterfield averaged $927.73 across their 128 mixed sex weaners, topping at 406c and $1,107.15.
The broad ribbon winner for the other breeds weaner steers and heifers was Col Cowin “Timber Top” Tenterfield for the second year running with Poll Hereford steers that sold for $1,020.16 and their sisters for $817.29.
Lex and Lorna Paterson ”Vinegar Hill” Liston yarded their annual draft of 60 Angus steers 14-16 months which saw them once again take out the broad ribbon for this section. The prize-winning pen sold for 345 cents to Bindaree Beef Inverell to return $1,360.16.
The next feature sale will be an all agents affair on May 12 being a Feature Weaner sale.
