The Artists’ Collective Studio’s gallery will be a hive of activity on Thursday, March 23 as the walls are cleared for the hanging of the inaugural open acquisition art prize entries, with judging due to start at 3pm.
It’s all gearing up for the official opening of the exhibition by sponsor Kerry Swain of Jennings and Kneipp, who is seeking a statement piece of art for the business’s reception area. Ms Swain feels the exhibition’s theme – Tenterfield Reflections – well suits the preferences of her clients who will be perusing the art piece.
The associated competition has attracted 38 entries from as far as Brisbane to the north and Armidale to the south, along with a strong local contingent. The field covers oils, watercolour, pen and ink, drawing, photographs and mosaics, as well as stone and clay sculptures.
“There’s something to suit all tastes,” the gallery’s Anni Washington said.
She said this is the first private acquisition prize offered in Tenterfield in recent years, and studio members are already looking forward to the 2018 event having the experience from this year’s competition and exhibition under their belt.
”This is the most exciting project we have taken on in the 3.5 years since the inception of the Collective,” Ms Washington said.
In addition to the major prize of $1000 and $250 each in the 2D and 3D categories, a viewers’ prize of $100 will also be awarded on a votes basis.
The exhibition opens on Friday evening, March 24 from 5.30pm til 8.30pm, when everyone is invited to gather at the gallery to celebrate art in Tenterfield. A lovely evening is planned, including wine and finger food. Following the official opening by Ms Swain co-judge Ms Findlay, Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery director, will discuss the winning artworks and the judges’ comments on the art generally.
The exhibition will continue until Sunday, April 9.
