A large team of Tenterfield competitors fronted up for the long awaited round one of the Short Circuit Motor Sport Association’s QLD-NSW Sprint Challenge conducted at Warwick’s Morgan Park Raceway.

Round One was to have been run on March 4/5 but due to track resurfacing being delayed the event had to be postponed to June 11. Round One turned out to be a resounding success with over 100 competitors from many parts of Queensland and NSW competing which produced a weekend of top motor sport.
Eight local Tenterfield drivers competed over the two-day event and did well against some stiff opposition in the four lap sprints. Troy Gordon in his Subaru WRX took out the class for All Wheel Drive over 4000cc with the fastest heat of 02:59.224.
The class for Sports Cars 2000 – 3000cc was won by Stephen Roos in his immaculate Mazda RX8 with a 03:01.209. Kylie Roos in the Mazda RX8 took out second with a respectable time of 03:14.528.
Rex Blaikie in a Clubman Special in the Sports Car Class for 1500 - 2000cc recorded his fastest heat of 03:18.498. The class for Improved Production Cars 3000 – 4500cc saw David and Todd Hayne, who shared the drive in Nissan NXR, had real family rivalry battle resulting with David finishing fourth in class with a time of 03:00.723 while Todd finished 0.319 behind David in fifth spot with 03:01.404.
Neal O’Reilly was on the ball in his Mini Cooper S in the Sports Sedan Under 2000cc class to finish second with 03:15.834.
Fifteen-year-old Adam Hayne joined the ranks of his father and brother at his first event behind the wheel of his Hyundai XL, which he prepared himself and is a real credit to him.

Fifteen-year-old Adam Hayne joined the ranks of his father and brother at his first event behind the wheel of his Hyundai XL, which he prepared himself and is a real credit to him. He picked up third place in the Junior class under 2000cc with a time of 03:23.145.
Adam said he learned to drive doing laps at his pop’s property on Mt McKenzie, and the Warwick outing was the first time he drove on bitumen. Dad Dave and big brother Todd, however, have been competing for five or six years, and the sport is proving to be a good bonding experience for the blokes.
Adam was happy with his performance in his first outing, especially in being chosen for the state-of-origin top 10 shootout, although NSW lost.
The next round of the series will be conducted at Morgan Park on July 8/9.
