The late Aub Gillespie would love to be on the sideline this Saturday at Rugby League Park as the Tigers host a doubleheader of all four teams in this season’s Border Rugby League competition, but no doubt he’ll be keeping an eye on proceedings.

The first game kicks off at 1.30pm when last year’s premiers the Inglewood Roosters play the Killarney Cutters. Then at 3pm the Tigers take on the Stanthorpe Gremlins.
Around 5pm the action moves off the field to the clubhouse where all the Tigers’ jerseys will be auctioned off, in the state they came off the players’ backs.
Last Aub’s Day more than $8000 was raised and split evenly between Tenterfield Hospital and the three divisions of the Tigers club: seniors, juniors and ladies leaguetag. Aub’s grandson Garry Gillespie who was behind instigating Aub’s Day to honour the Tigers’ number one fan is happy for the proceeds from this year’s auction to go towards supporting the senior and junior Tigers clubs.
The bar and canteen will be operating all afternoon and Tigers club president (and captain/coach) Brendan Minns hopes everyone will get out and support the auction on the day.
“Aub was a great supporter of the Tenterfield community and of rugby league in Tenterfield, and we do it to honour him,” Minns said.
“He holds a place in our hearts, especially mine. He was a great man, always on the sideline cheering us on, win, draw or lose.”
For those there for the football, a big afternoon is promised. Minns is expecting to see some great football played in the Inglewood/Killarney match, and then the same when the Tigers take on Stanthorpe.
“Saturday will be a big game if we are to stay on top of the leaderboard,” he said.
“It wasn’t a huge surprise they (Stanthorpe) got a win. They’ve been very strong as I expect nothing less on Saturday.”
(Stanthorpe beat Killarney 64-10 in the last round.)
“We need to be playing well, and again defence will be our main priority.”
