Everyone back in the day loved and had a great collection of golden books.
The stories and art work captured the imagination of so many children myself included.
I clearly remember two images from the golden book Snow White story.
The first picture showed the seven dwarfs heading off to work in their mines, with them all being as happy as can be, well apart from Grumpy.
The second image was of the dwarfs returning home to a great big tasty meal.
I remember thinking what a great life it would be to be one of the dwarfs, marching off to work singing Heigh ho Heigh Ho it’s off to work we go, and returning home expectantly to a wonderful home-cooked meal.
What a great work environment and satisfying life it must have been.
Yes, I know by now many of you will be wanting to remind me the story is a fairy tale and the reality of life can be very very different.
OK, so I have popped my balloon and returned to the reality of the world.
However, even that brief little bit of reminiscing cheered me up and made me smile.
In the Bible, Ecclesiastes 2:24-25, we are encouraged to eat and drink and find satisfaction in our work.
According to Ecclesiastes, this satisfaction which comes from our work and the food and drink we have is to be enjoyed, received and understood as a gift from God.
I guess this is why many people choose to pray and give thanks for the food and provision they receive each day in spite of whether it is plenty or little.
Paul writes in Philippians 4:12-13 that he has found the secret of being content whether living in plenty or in want.
This contentment Paul has found hinges on the way he receives what comes into his life.
Whether good or bad, lots or little he chooses to trust God and remain thankful to him who can give him strength.
Perhaps being content is not just restricted to fairy tales but possibly through a humble acknowledgment of God’s provision we can step into a satisfaction we may indeed find surprising and even very refreshing.
