A Guyra property currently producing sprouted barley as an alternative green feed is the location for a field day from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Friday, August 25 to examine the technology.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss the potential of green fodder technologies to improve livestock productivity in all conditions and its use as supplementary feed.

“This event is the perfect opportunity for people to see first-hand how this option may be able to fit into their business,” property owner Derek Smith said. 

“We’ll be demonstrating how we here at Working with Nature are adopting this technology into our system, suiting it to all types of livestock in all types of conditions.”

Animal nutritionist Professor Roger Hegarty from the University of New England will present on the day along with Mr Smith, each offering their experiences and perspectives on using green fodder.

Prof Hegarty believes the technology has its place in the industry and will discuss the outcome of research undertaken on feeding sprouted barley to ruminants.

Mr Smith will discuss his experience in the set-up and running of this technology, and his hopes for it into the future.

Local farmers and any interested individuals are invited to attend the field day, to educate themselves and investigate the technology.
