Member for Lismore, Thomas George MP turned the first sod on the $48 million project.
“This is a very exciting step for the community and one which will significantly improve road safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” Mr George said.
“The bridge across the Clarence River is the main link for road users, including heavy vehicles, between the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands.
“The existing bridge only accommodates single lane traffic, so this new crossing will improve traffic efficiency and transport productivity.
“The new 290 metre Tabulam Bridge will have one lane in each direction and also have a separate footpath for improved pedestrian and cyclist safety.”
Mr George said the existing crossing has required significant funding for maintenance work to ensure it remains safe for road users.
“The existing bridge was recently de-listed as a heritage structure and will be removed once the new crossing opens to traffic due to significant ongoing maintenance costs.
“The new bridge is evidence of the NSW Government’s commitment to upgrading regional and rural roads and maintaining them to the highest standard.”
Delaney Civil Pty Ltd will build the new bridge, which is expected to take about two years to complete, and will be funded under the NSW Government’s Bridges for the Bush program.
