“I love Christmas ham,” Member for New England Barnaby Joyce told Fairfax Media this week.
“I like the traditional Christmas dinner with the pudding and all the stuff that’s unhealthy – I love it.
“It’s always the same, a big lunch … a siesta, then the half-hungover cup of tea and whatever is leftover at night.
“But whatever you eat you have to lose later on, so be careful.”
Mr Joyce said it was important to remember that among the celebrations, Christmas can be a very hard time for some people.
“It’s a point of great joy for some people and a point of incredible sorrow for others who might be separated from their families or separated from their loved ones,” he said.

“Be mindful of that and one of the big things you can do at Christmas is not only look after yourself but just have an eye out for others who might be on the edges.
“If you can do some small act of kindness it can make a huge, huge difference to their life.”
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said the best part about Christmas was the day after.
“Boxing Day is the real celebration and I’ll be as I usually am, on the lounge, waiting for that first ball to be bowled,” he said.
And if you’re thinking about buying him a present – well, he’s pretty easy to please.
“I’m not a big present person, it’s more for me nowadays about having friends and loved ones around,” he said.
“I’m probably showing I’m getting older far beyond my years but I like the practical things, like socks and a new shirt.”
Mr Marshall said he hoped everyone has a safe and happy Christmas.
“I hope everyone has a very safe Christmas and spends time with family, friends and loved ones,” he said.
“For a lot of people it’s the only downtime they get in the year.
“Most importantly, stay safe, particularly if you’re travelling and cherish the time you have with loved ones and friends.
“I really look forward to what is, I think, going to be our biggest year ever in this region’s history with everything that’s going on at the moment.”
