Local songstress and talented pianist Emma Gianoli will be entertaining breakfasters with her repertoire covering hits spanning the 1960’s to the 1980’s.
The official programme announcing the shire’s Australia Day awardees from 2018 will be MCed by deputy mayor Don Forbes. It will feature an acknowledgement of country by Rosanne Bancroft-Stuart, a flag-raising by Tenterfield Highlands Pipe Band drum major Harry Bolton, and of course an address by this year’s Australia Day ambassador Susanne Gervay.
Ms Gianoli will be back to lead a singalong after the presentations of Citizen of the Year, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year and Community Event of the Year. Sadly no nominations were received for the Sportsperson of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year.
The pipes and drums of the pipe band then stir the crowd before Mr Forbes’ official closure of the event at around 11am.
Here’s a flashback to Australia Day at Memorial Hall last year.
Urbenville
Urbenville will host the 12th annual Australia Day cricket match at the Urbenville Showgrounds and Bowls Club, starting at 10am. Bring along a chair, hat and umbrella, and slap on the sunscreen.
As well as the cricket match there’ll be tug-of-war, sack races, thong throwing, three-legged races and lots more games, as well as Australia Day award announcements. Barbecue food and cold drinks will be on sale.
If it rains, celebrations will be held inside the Bowls Club.
Mingoola
As part of the Live & Local music festival, Australia Day celebrations at Mingoola Hall will feature entertainment by Josh Moylan and Helen Conroy that night. Organisers hope to see lots of people enjoying the music, to help to foster live music in the district.
Bring along a picnic tea or meat to throw on the barbecue and a salad to share from about 7pm (NSW time). Ice cream will be provided. The cost as usual will be $2 per family.
Friends and visitors are very welcome. The more the merrier.
Liston
Australia Day 2018 activities will be held at the Liston Community Hall with billy tea and damper at 3.30pm then kids’ games and competitions in the park from 4-5pm before the barbecue fires up.
Local rock band Fugarwie will be performing from 6pm, again as part of Live & Local.
Note that for Liston, all times are Queensland times.
