William Yang was born and brought up in Australia of Chinese parents but spent the first 20 or so years of his life denying his Chinese heritage. He looked Chinese but felt Australian.
People would refer to him as though he were a Chinese student visiting Australia and he wouldn’t disabuse them of the false impression.
But then he decided to explore his background and ended up going to China many times – and there he felt Australian, even as he looked Chinese.
So his show here will be about himself – “I really just talk about myself” – but other elements, too, including his photography and his gay life in Sydney..
He also intends to talk about the rich Chinese heritage in this area.
His show is at the Tenterfield School of Arts Theatre on Sunday, March 11 at 2pm, before moving on to Glen Innes on March 13 and Armidale on March 16.
