The 35-year-old senior constable, who cannot be named for legal reasons, did not front Glen Innes Local Court on Friday after he was charged with two offences.
An agent solicitor told the court the policeman was not present and did not enter pleas to the offences of domestic assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.
Magistrate Michael Holmes was told the case had been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Group 6 division – which takes charge of cases where police officers are facing offences – to prosecute.
Mr Holmes adjourned the case to April and said an interim apprehended violence order would continue, ordering the officer to appear on the next occasion.
"I need the defendant in attendance,” he said.
The officer is not on bail.
Fairfax Media understands the officer is not stationed in Glen Innes but remains at work on restrictive duties.
