Georgia Roberts still gets a bit of a shock when she gets out of bed each morning and sees her reflection, after shaving off her long hair on Sunday for the World’s Greatest Shave.
It had always been a long-held intention to one day cut her hair to help the Leukemia Foundation fight blood cancers, and for Georgia Sunday, March 18 was the day at Our Place Wine and Espresso Bar in front of a strong crowd of supporters.
Initially she had very modest ambitions of raising $560 for the cause, which was met very quickly. The goal was then upped to $700. When that was breached she thought she might end up with $1000, and by Sunday thought $1700 or $1800 may be in her reach.
After counting up all the collection tins around town and contributions on the day, Georgia has managed to raise more than $2000 for the cause and she’s thrilled with the result.
“Everyone dug deep, probably because they all know someone who’s been affected,” she said.
On Sunday supporters had the opportunity to snip off a ponytail before the number three razor was pulled out. Georgia expected to be emotional, but was more excited when it came to the crunch.
Dad Tony Roberts was first in line to cut off a chunk of hair, and Georgia thinks he was more nervous.
Every cut hair was captured and dispatched to the Leukemia Foundation. Ponytails more than 20 centimetres long will go towards creating wigs, thanks to a partnership between the foundation and a wig company now in its 25th year.
Even clippings and shavings are used to help cleanup oil spills and other messes, so nothing goes to waste.
Georgia said family members are still rubbing her head for the prickly feeling, and some people are having trouble recognising her.
After many years of long locks, however, she is looking forward to trying new styles and is in the process of becoming a platinum blond.
After that, she said she probably grow her hair long and do it all over again.
Georgia extended her thanks to all those who had donated and supported her. Donations can still be made online at Georgia’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraising site.
