The under 12s duo play in the Stanthorpe competition and made their way up the ranks to be selected in the Southern Downs – made up of Warwick, Stanthorpe and Allora players – representative team.
The competition is made up of teams from Western Downs, Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba.
Hedley and Fowler were two of Stanthorpe’s representatives in the Southern Downs team.
“Tom Fowler who is our son and Hedley Donges have been playing cricket for the Stanthorpe junior comp for a couple of years now,” Rhonda Fowler said.
“During that time they were selected to play in the Southern Downs rep side.”
The Tenterfield duo contributed to the Southern Downs’ season and took on a tough Toowoomba team in the final to land a five-wicket win.
Rhonda said it was the cherry on the cake for the pair who made the trip to Stanthorpe every weekend to play because of their love for the sport.
She said while there is opportunity to play locally, they have grown by participating in the bigger competition north of the border.
“It is a nice thing for these two boys from a small area to be selected from a group of kids, they just go up there and play cricket on a Saturday morning,” she said.
“It was pretty special for them and then they have gone on to win that competition.
“They started here playing junior cricket and then because it is a smaller town they weren't getting that full on experience of hard-ball play and playing a full game of cricket whereas in Stanthorpe they can do that.”
The grand final result was a surprise upset with the Southern Downs team falling to Toowoomba just one week before the decider.
Rhonda said they didn’t expect to be crowned the Darling Downs South West Queensland Inner City champions after suffering the loss in the lead-up to the final.
“They played Toowoomba the weekend before they played them in the grand final and Toowoomba beat them by heaps so we went up there and didn't think the boys would have won,” she said.
“When they got up there they played really well and ended up winning the grand final by five wickets.
“Tom and Hedley were very happy and proud of their final against Toowoomba.”
