The competition brought together the best graduate woolclassers from across Australia to compete for the golden stencil, which was won by Matilda Scott (Conara, Tasmania), and acts as a platform for new and emerging wool classers.
Sophie arguably has wool in her blood as the daughter of stud Merino breeders David and Tina Watson, Maister’s Swamp Merinos, Kentucky. “What is particularly pleasing is that we have some very talented younger people coming into the industry,” AWEX chief executive officer Mark Grave said.
All finalists were top TAFE graduates and for the competition they classed crossbred, medium and fine Merino wool, used AWEX-ID, made valuations and an oral presentation to the judges. “To be nominated is an honour and they are to be congratulated on achieving this recognition,” Mr Grave said.
Sophie also won the 45th DAS Campbell prize for the top NSW graduate.
