Tannymorel took home the triples honours, a payback for Tenterfield’s recent fours win on their home turf. Organiser Neville Richardson said the powerful Tannymorel team outgunned 21 other teams and some of the best bowling combinations in New England to win the event.

The team of Ron Philps, Mick O’Leary and Peter Collis defeated teams from Stanthorpe, Glen Innes and Tenterfield on its way to first place. They beat home a consistent team from Glen Innes lead by Bill Newberry. Third placegetter was Mick Mill’s team from The Summit.

The only joy for Tenterfield was the team of Judy Richardson, Graeme Warner and Neville Richardson who were last round winners over Southern Cross. His team lost to the highly-favoured Toowoomba team skipped by premier league player Col Hayes in the first round, but came back with wins in the remaining rounds.

Some teams seemed affected by the sporadic rain in the afternoon, but at least the event wasn’t marred by the cold winds of last year. Mr Richardson some most competitors were happy campers who enjoyed the warming lamb shanks for lunch in the restaurant.

Each visitor is assigned a draw number to determine the winner of the free night’s accommodation at the Bowls Club motel, and Inglewood’s Vinnie Babbington number has come out of the randomiser an amazing three times in three years.

Lucky winner of the raffle was Tenterfield’s Ron Wilde.

Of the 66 players on the day, 48 were visitors and this reflects fantastic support for the carnival from other clubs, Mr Richardson said. He thanked the local members who filled in teams at short notice and prepared the morning and afternoon teas and ran the raffle.

Star Tenterfield player Penny Stanbridge had to retire with illness after the first round and Mr Richardson said it was great to see others step up to avoid any gaps in the draw.

He said it was great to see the greens full with classy bowlers from all over New England.

“We seem to be doing things right, and keep bringing people to Tenterfield.

“We have to keep the magic going.”
