Local Government Week (July 30 to August 5) kicked off in Tenterfield on Wednesday (August 1) morning with the Mayor’s Business Breakfast at 6.45 am at the Tenterfield Golf Club.

The chilly morning did not deter the 60 attendees who tucked into a hearty breakfast while being wowed by the wonderful presentations of a number of our very successful local producers.

First up was Sandra and Simmone Cox who detailed their enterprise and hard won success of their Black Angus Stud, Speriby North.
Sandra and Simmone spoke enthusiastically about the success of their cattle sales (on-line auctions), genetics and breeding program.
Other topics Sandra and Simmone raised included the impacts of drought and road accessibility.
Darren Battistuzzi, Manager of Inglebrae Farm at Sunnyside gave an in-depth presentation on Inglebrae’s operations, highlighting their breeding program and suitability of the Angus breed to our region.
Inglebrae are also great supporters of the Tenterfield High School agricultural program and are excited about the future of the industry for our region.
The Company also supports buying locally where possible, and are good contributors to the town of Tenterfield and the Shire.
Phil Jones, who heads up the Agricultural Farm at the Tenterfield High School, was next to present, along with students Fraser Saccon, Grace Clothier, Leyla Campbell and Cody Johnstone.
The students’ enthusiasm and passion for agriculture was evident, and underlines the importance of this program for the future development of primary industry in our Shire.
Lisa Martin from Alumy Creek Angus Stud, Tenterfield, gave an in-depth insight into breeding Angus stud cattle, with emphasis on quality breeding stock, ability to thrive in harsh environments, good-tempered, heavy muscled, and easy fleshing cattle.
Lisa also spoke on their breeding program, genetic management, and the success of the Alumy Creek bulls.
Former Tenterfield High School agriculture student Josh Moylan rounded off the morning, providing background on the development of Australian Plant Bio Tech Pty Ltd and 3 Brothers Hemp.
Josh’s presentation provided an insight to the history of hemp use and its development in Australia.
The company, 3 Brothers Hemp, consists of Josh Moylan, Mitchell Hynes, and Matthew Singh.
Mayor Petty was very excited by the presentations.
“These people prove what an amazing rural community we have in our Shire”, he said.
“Resilient, innovative and successful, even in these hard, dry times. We should all be very proud of our rural residents who form the backbone of our community”.
As a further celebration of 2018 Local Government Week, Council staff took a turn at delivering Meals on Wheels for the week. All participants indicating what a positive experience this was.
