“Decorative Lighting & Display Company were very busy installing the lights for most of last week and it was great to take a walk last Thursday evening with a number of my fellow councillors and council staff to admire the new look,” Mayor Peter Petty said.
Initially small solar panels were to be used to power the fairy lights but upon investigation on the first night of installation, it was found the street lights on the western side of Rouse Street were too bright and interfered with the function of the solar panels and the desired lighting effect.
“This problem was not foreseen by the installers,” Cr Petty said.
“As a result they undertook hardwiring of the fairy lights to the under-awning lights along the shop fronts at no additional cost to council.
“I also need to stress that the under-awning lights form part of council’s lighting of the main street so there is no cost to shop owners for this.”
There are plans to illuminate the remaining trees at a later date, subject to future funding allocations.
