The ‘progressive dinner’ has made a comeback to Tenterfield with St Joseph’s Primary School Parents and Friends Association (P&F) hosting a dinner on Friday night, September 21 taking in some of the town’s best eateries.

P&F president Simon Piccini said the exercise was a fundraiser for the students, who had heard through their Minni Vinnies network that families in other areas farther west are being forced to shower at public amenities because there is no water at home.

The children are keen to support a Red Cross initiative to provide toiletry packs to those affected, to make the experience a little more pleasant. The $965 raised by the dinner will go towards assembling a lot of packs.
Mr Piccini recalls the popularity of progressive dinners with his parents’ generation, although they involved going from one house to another for the various courses. In a rural setting that can mean that a lot of the evening is spent travelling, so it was decided to instead showcase some of the great cafes and restaurants that Tenterfield has to offer.
The $85 dinner kicked off with entrees served at The Corner Life & Style, followed by mains at The Commercial Boutique Hotel featuring a choice of chicken ballotine or local rump steak, before a selection of sweet treats at OP Wine and Espresso Bar, with wine, beers and coffees throughout.
“It was a brilliant evening,” Mr Piccini said.
Given the success of the venture it is expected to become an annual event, potentially mixing up the restaurants and cafes involved to highlight more of Tenterfield’s foodie spots.
Forty people participated this year (after several had to drop out due to other commitments), but Mr Piccini thinks that 50 will be a comfortable number for future dinners, limiting ticket sales to that number.
It has the potential to become a much sought after ticket with St Joey’s students the beneficiaries, but with a lot of enjoyment for supporters along the way.
