To give Tenterfield businesses the heads-up on this technology that they’re going to be hearing a lot more of, a blockchain explainer is the first topic in a calender of business breakfast meetings being organised by Vince Sherry under his VS Strategies banner.

Presenting will be Matthew Shearing, lawyer, podcaster, educator and speaker, as well as a founder of BlockSense.
Briefly, blockchain is a new form of internet that permanently and unalterably records transactions, allowing participants to bank tokens of some form (currency, energy units, votes etc) in a secure electronic wallet. Applications for the new facility are still being developed, but as the platform cuts out middlemen (such as banks and finance companies) while providing transparency to the parties involved, the sky’s the limit.
Mr Shearing will help attendees make sense of the technology, how it will affect their business and how to be prepared.
It’s already having an impact on the real estate industry, according to Mr Sherry, with blockchain-enabled ‘smart’ contracts potentially in our near future and that of any business with a supply chain.
“It could revolutionise cattle trading, for example,” he said.
The Business before Breakfast series has the support of the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry and Business and the Tenterfield Shire Council. Mr Sherry said he is launching the series to bring in keynote speakers with something thought-provoking for local business operators to talk about.
He’s aiming for 4-6 business breakfasts a year, “depending on appetite”, which may extend into multi-day workshops and business consultancy.
Speaking at the next Business before Breakfast, slated for February, will be Dr Tapan Sarker on the topic of pastoral sustainability and sustainable development in a period of climate change. Also filling out the calendar will be presenters sharing grassroot tools in the areas of marketing, human resource management (particularly recruiting in rural areas) as well as leadership and change management.
To start off the series, however, the blockchain breakfast is on Wednesday, October 31 starting 7am at the Tenterfield TAFE College. Mr Sherry feels the college provides a good, high-tech learning environment.
The $45 tickets can be booked online at Eventbrite and include a light breakfast catered by Our Place Wine & Espresso Bar, who will have its coffee van on-site.
