Mr Anderson will look at the 12 point plan on hospital security which was developed in 2016 and make recommendations on where further improvements can be made to hospital safety.

Mr George said in light of a recent incident at Lismore Base Hospital where a woman has been charged after lunging at a staff member with a syringe, lacerating his arm, changes need to be made to improve the safety of all staff and patients.

“Our hard working doctors, nurses and ward staff already have a tough enough job, without having to worry about being attacked,” he said.

The inquiry will consult with medical staff, unions and professional associations to ensure all areas of concern are covered and any recommendations are well informed.

“It is important not to pre-empt what Mr Anderson will find, but I will support any decisions the government decides to make into the future,” Mr George said.

“I want to reiterate to people right across the electorate, despite recent media reports, our hospitals are safe to visit and everyone should access them if and when they need to.”

The findings of the review will be handed back to the government in February next year.
