Keen participants from Darling Downs Sporting Motorcyclist Club in Toowoomba had already booked their Tenterfield accommodation in anticipation of this year’s run, so Wayne was again thrown into action.
Bikers will head off from The Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School at 10.45am, heading up the highway to Stanthorpe and then back via the Ballandean Tavern and Jennings Pub. Both these locations are drop-off points for anyone wishing to bring some cheer on Christmas Day to a struggling local family, and Wayne said to keep the older kids and mum and dad in mind when choosing items to donate.
He’s seen the look on the face of recipients when they receive an unexpected gift.
“It just ‘makes it’ for the kids,” he said.
Donations can also be left at the school or at Regional Australia Bank.
Gifts are distributed through the Salvos, who are providing much-needed support to drought-affected families in the district who no doubt could do with some Christmas cheer.
Up to a dozen riders from the Toowoomba club are regular participants in the run, often with partners following in cars and spending the weekend in Tenterfield. Wayne said up to 40 riders can be involved but it always hard to know numbers before the day.
Any licensed rider and registered bike is welcome to participate. Supervision can also be arranged for learner riders.
Bike enthusiasts are also invited to come along to the school from 10am and check out the bikes and speak with the riders, who are always happen to share their enthusiasm for the sport. Have lunch at the barbecue which will be happening on the run’s return at around 1.30pm.
Wayne’s been involved in the run since its inception in 1986 and it’s often been a wet outing, something we could do with this year. He said the run goes ahead rain or shine.
“I hope it’s something the community supports,” he said.
And while he may ride in future he said it’s definitely the last one he organises, due to health considerations.
