The civic welcome for the visiting Bavarian Brass Band in Bruxner Park heralded the cultural exchange between Tenterfield and its sister city Ottobeuren, but just ahead of the event was a gathering in the forecourt of Council Chambers for the shire's own culture to be retained.

Residents were encouraged to come along armed with old photos, stories and snippets of information to flesh out aspects of the district's history.

The effort was funded by part of the $100,000 Heritage Near Me grant council received for a project to involve the community in building a modern inventory of the district's heritage items and places. Consultants were also engaged to investigate past inventories like the Tenterfield Shire Wide Heritage Study, Tenterfield Main Street Heritage Study 1997 and the Tenterfield Aboriginal Heritage Study to look for gaps and identify opportunities for improvement.
While the Heritage Near Me grant expires next month, council's senior planner Tamai Davidson said it will be an ongoing project to continue recording stories, memories and histories. She said nothing is too trivial, as it may just be the missing link that completes a profile or generates more information.
