The ten students attending Urbenville Public School felt a bit special on Wednesday, March 26, receiving a visit from celebrity bush cook and outback bushman Ranger Nick.

The children got an opportunity to get in touch with some handy outback and bush culinary skills in a hands-on experience.

Previously an environmental education support officer and ranger guide from outback Queensland, Ranger Nick educated the Urbenville students on the finer points of damper-making in an outdoor class while learning about fire safety as well as the history and origin of damper in Australia.

Part of the life lesson was discussing environmental impact issues, as well as the benefits of outdoor life to mental and physical health.

"It was such a treat for the students," school principal Chris Sifko said.

"It helped them understand and appreciate more about Australian history and their local environment."

A lesson on the health benefits of being outside and on the history of the damper rounded out the experience for the students.
