St Stephen's unveils new $100,000 lease of life

St Stephen's Presbyterian Church was only 18 years old when iconic bush poet AB 'Banjo' Paterson married his sweetheart Alice Walker of Tenterfield Station on April 8, 1903 but more recently it was starting to show its age.

The faithful gathered last Sunday for the official reopening of the church following the efforts of not only the Mobile Mission Maintenance team but also local builder Tom Murphy and painter Paul Lyons to breathe new life into the aging structure. The church's facelift was courtesy of a $100,000 grant from the Heritage Near Me program, helping to deal with rotting timbers undermining the structure. Pastor Seymour hopes the building will now become more of a community-use venue.

In addition to replacing rotten timbers, the project included relocating the ramp, new timber stairs and floor coverings, and repainting both inside and out.
