The Winter Wearable Art show features 40 works from 20 textile artists, both local notables and submissions from farther afield.
Curator Linda Nye of the Artists' Collective Studio said it's wearable art, with the emphasis on art.
They are all handmade, original designs, and the designs are stunning. You certainly won't be running into anyone else at the Sydney races with the same hat, for instance.
One of the headpieces resembles a collection of autumn leaves, placing it very much a home in Tenterfield.
In addition to head wear the range of items on show includes shawls, scarves and coats, some featuring hand-dyed or screen-printed motifs.
One exhibitor is a master knitter, and wool is a common theme, be it from sheep or alpaca, or cashmere or mohair from goats.
The gallery put out an open invitation for submissions, and the result is an eclectic mix of truly unique pieces.
The exhibition will be officially opened by one of its contributors, Dr Denise Rall.
Dr Rall is an adjunct fellow in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University in Lismore, and an adjunct lecturer in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of New England in Armidale.
Her accreditation in costume from NSW TAFE led into a career of research into the genre. Her research interests include textiles, fashion and wearable art, and how technology and the internet have changed women's roles in computing, domestic work, craft, and social protest.
She's currently looking at the narratives surrounding the clothing of women in political positions, promising an interesting presentation.
The exhibition's official opening, conducted by Dr Rall, is at 5.30pm this Friday and all are promised a warm welcome.
All submissions included in the exhibition are available for sale and the exhibition then continues on until July 7. No truer is the old adage, however, of first in best dressed.
Winter Wearable Art is the latest in a run of popular exhibitions hosted by the collective, following on the heels of the Australiana - 9 x 5" Art Prize.
Around the exhibitions the gallery continues to bring in new works from favourites and new artists, and opening night will provide an opportunity to check out their work as well.
Currently there are paintings by artists from Mullumbimby and the coast, hanging alongside the latest productions of well-known local artists.
