Emergency services were called to the scene of the single vehicle crash at 7.30 last night following reports of a vehicle fire 20 kilometers north of Glen Innes.
A Hyundai Tucson had left the road and rolled several times before catching fire.
A woman, who has yet to be identified by police, was riding in the front passenger seat. A 22-year-old man, who was driving the vehicle, suffered severe burns to his legs and hands, as well as internal injuries.
A 10-year-old girl in the back seat suffered serious internal injuries.
Both surviving passengers were evacuated from the scene by Westpac helicopter and taken to John Hunter hospital. They've reportedly been stabilised, but are in a serious condition.
It's understood the woman suffered severe burns in the fire.
The trio are from Newcastle and were heading to Queensland along the New England highway.
Detectives and a police forensics team attended the scene and are preparing a report for the coroner.
Both fire and rescue NSW and the Rural Fire service attended the scene to extinguish a grass fire that had been ignited by the car fire, though there was no fuel spill. The ambulance and the volunteer rescue association also attended the scene.
The New England highway was closed southbound last night for approximately two hours.
