Glen Innes police nine students were kept in hospital after being checked out by medical staff.
The bus was heading from Drake to Tenterfield this morning, part of a three-car knot of vehicles on the Bruxner highway at between 8.15am and 8.20 this morning.
Around 10 kilometres outside Tenterfield, the leading vehicle slowed to make a right turn. The bus driver failed to sufficiently brake and rear-ended it, police say.
The third vehicle, a truck, hit the bus from behind.
All all 19 kids on board were injured in the double smash, with nine hospitalised at the Tenterfield hospital with whiplash, bruising and other non serious injuries, according to Glen Innes police.
Police said investigations are pending into the crash.
Students from all three Tenterfield schools were on board. Police said they expect the remaining kids to be able to be released from hospital this afternoon.
Police said they were "massively lucky" the crash wasn't far more serious.
