In Tamworth's postcode of 2340 some 3571 locals hold a gun licence, by far the largest number of shooters in the state.
But the region is no longer home to the most prolific firearm collector in NSW, with a Moonbi resident disposing of hundreds of guns from his 311-firearm collection, according to the stats.
The latest statistics from the NSW Police Registry, which cover to March, show the state's total arsenal has shrunk to just 234,632 guns, down 524.
Craig Mearns, owner of Tamworth gun store Calibre Country, said there isn't really an 'average' Tamworth gun owner.
"You would be surprised," he said. "Lawyers, solicitors, doctors, school teachers, journalists.
"Being out in the country or being in this area, [Tamworth is] a great area because of the amount of state forest, a lot of country. I think the mentality around firearms ownership, it's not as left-wing I suppose.
"It's a way of life to a lot of people."
With an end to the drought he said a lot of farmers would be looking to update their guns to hunt down pest species.
But it's just as common for people to buy a gun for fun.
"There's people that buy them as old rifles and probably never ever shoot them. It's just like collecting motor cars," Mr Mearns said.
But the latest statistics show the state's biggest collector, a resident of Moonbi with an arsenal of 311 guns, no longer holds the honour. The town's biggest owner is now registered for just 101 firearms.
The state's biggest individual arsenal - 359 guns - is now registered to a Sydney address. Second place is also in Sydney.
Tamworth's largest arsenal is a mere 135 guns, well down the list of the 100 most prolific owners.
Gun ownership is common across the New England region, with 1863 gun owners in Armidale, 1005 in Glen Innes and 1154 in Gunnedah.
Goulburn is the third best-armed city in NSW, with 11875 registered guns in postcode 2580.
NSW Police statistics do not include dealers and collectors.
