Severe thunderstorm and hailstone warning for Armidale, Tenterfield, Tamworth on Thursday afternoon

IT'S time to get the washing in and get safely inside, as the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warns a severe thunderstorm could hit Armidale on Thursday afternoon.

The BoM issued the severe storm alert just after 12:30pm, indicating a dangerous cell could affect parts of the region like Armidale, Tenterfield and Tamworth.

The "severe thunderstorms" are likely to produce large hailstones over the next several hours, according to the BoM.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has advised locals to stay safely indoors with their pets, and keep away from windows.

People should move their vehicles under cover or away from trees.

It's advised computers and appliances should be switched off and people should avoid using the phone during the storm.

Any loose items around the home should be secured, and residents should keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or electric fences.

Anyone living in a bushfire affected area should remain vigilant and note the landscape may have changed, and damaged trees could be more likely to fall.
