While opening up Tenterfield Dam to ad hoc fishing remains a dream until the new water treatment plant is up and running (hopefully by the end of next year), one-off organised fishing days are still happening and there's one this Saturday, May 8.

DPI Fisheries is encouraging would-be anglers to get along to Saddlers Estate Park on the dam from 9am to 1pm, but you have to bring along your own gear due to COVID. Pre-registration is not required, just come along for the day.

There will be free fishing sessions with tuition from expert Fishcare volunteers and access to a mobile information centre.
Chances of catching one of the prized rainbow trout that entered the dam last Friday will be good, and snagging one of the 300 tagged ones will earn you a free lure (although there probably won't be much growth to report).
Ozfish's Michael Davey said they're pretty feisty at this time of year given the cooler water and have a voracious appetite.
He said fishers might be surprised at the fight that even the little guys put up, and he knows there are still some eight pound monsters in the dam as well.
"Hopefully we'll be able to put a few smiles on faces."
