Police have established that during the evening of Tuesday, March 2, 25 weaner cattle were loaded into a truck and driven from a location in Glen Innes.

As the truck travelled along Church Street, some of the weaners fell from the truck. Members of the public assisted to herd the cattle to a safe location where police were contacted. It was later discovered that the cattle were stolen.

It is known that the truck travelled north from Glen Innes where further cattle fell from the vehicle. Some of these cattle suffered significant injuries and had to be euthanised.

Detective Sergeant Bennett Nolan from the Rural Crime Prevention Team said cattle theft is a serious crime that greatly impacts the agricultural industry.

"Farmers are recovering from drought and bushfires, with many having lower than normal levels of livestock.

"Thefts such as this can cause a significant financial and emotional impact on farmers, not to mention the fact that the carelessness of those involved resulted in the deaths of several animals.

"We have released vision and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward."
