MOUNT Isa Police used tyre spikes to catch a wanted man travelling to the city from Cloncurry on Monday.
The vehicle burst into flames after it hit the spikes. The man escaped from the car and was not injured in the blaze.
Police intercepted the male driver 10 kilometres East of Mount Isa towards Cloncurry, causing the highway to be closed both ways.
Police attempts to stop the vehicle in Cloncurry were unsuccessful leaving Mount Isa Police to use the spikes on the highway.
Mount Isa Police Sergeant and District Crime Organiser Cath Purcell said police were told the wanted man was travelling towards Mount Isa.
“Police had information that the man was traveling through,” Sgt Purcell said. “He was wanted for a number of serious offences and that he had failed to stop for police. The tyre spikes were deployed in order to intercept the vehicle.”
“A male person was charged and will appear in court for a number of charges including evading police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unregistered vehicle and displaying false plates.”
