The Deepwater Races are going from strength to strength, according to jockey club president Doug Stevenson, and the club expects a crowd of around 3000 for the big day on Saturday.
“It is our relaxed ‘bush racing’ atmosphere that attracts people,” he said.
“Some people attend for the horse races, some for the fashions and others for the dancing but they are all there to socialise and enjoy themselves.”
The six-race program is followed by the Fashions on the Field presentations and entertainment.
Mr Stevenson said the success of the Deepwater Races was due to a large supportive committee and a passionate secretary – Tricia Stack – whose “enthusiasm inspires us all”.
“The committee which comprises roughly 30 people not only run the actual race day in roles such as gate keepers, beer carters, car park attendants and barrier attendants but set up all the marquees, mow and maintain the course in the week prior and clean-up the following day,” he said.
“A successful race day is a reflection on the wonderful team work of the entire committee.”
The major Race Day sponsors for 2017 are Roberts and Morrow, Wilshire and Co, The Deepwater Inn, Elders Glen Innes and The Sullivan Family.
“We thank them for their generous contributions,” Mr Stevenson said.
To celebrate our 150th anniversary year, with help from Winning Edge Presentations the club has a beautiful Race Day Cup to present to the winner of the Deepwater Cup.
After race six, the Fashions on the Field segment takes centre stage on the racetrack in front of the lovely heritage grandstand.
“In addition to our usual sections we are also having a period costume segment which we anticipate to be an interesting draw card,” Mr Stevenson said.
Prizes will also be given for most stylish couple, best dressed gent, contemporary racewear and most elegant lady, just to name a few.
Entertainment – a live band Smiths Lane (from Tenterfield) will kick off the evening after the fashions and will finish at 9pm.
“Deepwater Race Meeting is always a fun day out and I would like to extend a big welcome to all to attend,” Mr Stevenson said.
The barbecue and outdoor café will be operated by the Vegetable Creek Hospital Auxiliary, the Masonic Lodge Glen Innes runs a drinks stall and local Lions run a food van. Two bars will operate throughout the day.
There will also be a mobile TAB booth, delicious treats from the Super Strawberry, woodfire pizza, mobile ATMs and a jumping castle for the kids.
