Tenterfield’s only female mayor has been honoured as part of this year’s event.
The 21st Oracles of the Bush offers plenty of the write stuff, including performances from champion bush poets Melanie Hall and Susan Carcary.
“We’re expecting about 400 people this year and they come from as far afield as south east Queensland and the north coast,” one of the regular organisers, Jann Newman, said.
Oracles of the Bush draws together poets, performers and residents from March 30 to April 2, with this year’s theme being “Destination Tenterfield, My Home Town”.
Each year the event honours a local legend, with Ms Sullivan named for her tireless dedication to Tenterfield.
Highlights from her term as mayor include the “twinning” of Tenterfield with Ottobeuren in Germany and the construction of the Gateway Visitors Information Centre.
This year’s Oracles of the Bush begins with “A brush with Verse” on Thursday.
The word is this twilight event will attract a strong crowd for the street party on the corner of Rouse and High Street.
Other performances include a children’s concert at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, tea and damper at Bald Rock National Park with Hall and Carcary, a poets’ concert with this year’s Junior Looming Legend and poets’ brawl at Jubilee Park.
Five poets and musician David Newman will entertain crowds at a number of venues, including Bruxner Park, Tenterfield Golf Club, the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall and Jubilee Park.
Carcary and Hall will bring their bush verse to a number of locations, having travelled across Australia and New Zealand since teaming up for their two-women show in 2008.
They have also performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Destination NSW has just awarded a $20,000 grant to Oracles of the Bush and the money will be used to produce a promotional video.
“We already have in mind someone who could produce the video,” Ms Newman said.
